After the phenomenal success of his "Love In Numbers" CD release party at AUXXX / BERLIN - Hayden Chisholm brings his multi-dimensional 21st Century music to Amsterdam. For this occasion he will present a new version of his composition "Love In Numbers" for multitrack alto saxophones as well as playing solo sax with sruti box accompaniment. Well-tuned and elevating music for times of change!

Hayden writes about "Love In Numbers" :

This work is about the marriage of two universal creative principles expressed through sound: the harmonic series, and the growth series more commonly known as the Fibonacci series. Their point of intersection is a fascinating one, both mathematically and musically. The harmonic series is perhaps more familiar to lovers of music but the way in which the Fibonacci series interacts with the overtones reveals much more to the listener regarding the nature of self-similarity, organic growth, inter-dimensional relationship and micro-macrocosm similarity. The Fibonacci series gradually approaches the irrational number phi (1.618…), more commonly known as the Golden Section. Some musicians have attempted to use the Golden Section by dividing their works accordingly along the time axis; in this work this proportion is approached on the vertical harmonic axis, which occurs in

Dopplergänger's music is a subtle balance of instrumental extended techniques, melodic apparitions, electronically generated ersatz and electric whispering, a blend of acoustics and electronics which mix to the point where they become indistinguishable. The band did a ten-day residency in Moers (DE), developing improvisational concepts and sound. During the residency they played the 'Free Essen Festival, the concert was recorded by WDR radio and will be broadcasted, plus concerts at the Temporary Art Centre in Eindhoven (NL), Schlosstheater Moers, and the LOFT in Cologne.

ARTIST BIOGRPAHIES:

ANDREW BROOKS is an Australian saxophonist-composer creating work which draws from jazz, improvised and experimental traditions. He leads several original music projects and is involved in numerous other collaborative projects. His music explores the intersection between composition and improvisation.

Andrew has lived and worked in Melbourne and Berlin, he co-leads the ensembles 'Motion' and 'Terracotta Tile Games' and performs as part of a duo with the digital artist, 'Kynan Tan'. He has toured and performed nationally, appearing at festivals such as the TURA New Music Festival (2009), Melbourne International Jazz Festival (2011), Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival (2011) and the Wangaratta Jazz Festival (2010). Andrew has also performed or colaborated with Sabir Mateen (USA), Giorgio Magnanensi (Ita/Can), Hayden Chisholm (NZ/Ger), Peter Knight, Shoeb Ahmad and Dr. Tony Gould.

Andrew is also the co-founder of the independent record label and creative music network, ‘Listen/Hear Collective’. An artist-run initiative, ‘Listen/Hear Collective’ was created to provide a home for performers and composers whose music refuses to be defined by the expectations of a single genre and brings together open-minded, stylistically-diverse musicians, producers and technicians.

MIKE MAJKOWSKI, born 1983, is a double bassist from Sydney, Australia, now living in Berlin. He began his musical activities as a jazz bassist, and has since developed an active interest in music of an exploratory nature. He performs as a soloist, in duo with Jim Denley as 'Blip,' in trio with Chris Abrahams & James Waples as 'Roil,' and frequently collaborates with other improvisers from around the way. He holds an interest in developing technical possibilities for the double bass.

MORTEN J. OLSEN is a musician, sometimes composing - once in a blue moon involved in other arts. Born in Stavanger, Norway in 1981. He has lived 5 years in Amsterdam and is since 2006 based in Berlin. He works with a sound palette that encompasses the history of orchestral percussion, electronics and rock – a fountainhead of possibilities that he manages with pin-point critical perception and exceptional taste. He is a constant reminder that just because it sounds good, doesn’t mean its good enough.

KYNAN TAN is a sound artist who creates installation, performances and recorded works that investigate the use of digital technology in creating immersive and temporal audio-visual environments. His live performance works are based on scored and improvised instrumental parts and real-time manipulation with the computer software Max/MSP, the latest shows featuring vocals, computer generated sound and guitar processed into dense, shifting spectralist textures.

In December 2009 Kynan toured Japan, playing 11 shows, performing with Kouhei Harada, Psychedelic Desert and Chihei Hatakeyama. This tour also saw the self-release of the Two Clouds EP. Between 2009-2010 Kynan also supported Lawrence English, Daniel Menche and Tom Hall.

Kynan has been involved with several sound installations, including his own Hypnogenia, Floating Spires and Threads installations. Approximately 5000 people viewed and interacted with Hypnogenia while it was installed at Scitech in early 2010. Kynan is also involved in collaborating with film and dance, scoring 20 works in the past 3 years, including two collaborations with LINK Dance Company, with New Zealand Dancer/Choreographer Craig Bary in 2009 and LINK artistic director Michael Whaites in 2010.

Including visual elements into live performances has been a recent focus, manipulating synaesthetic relationships between sound and light to create juxtaposing textures.

Kynan currently lives and works in Perth, Western Australia. He co-presents the experimental radio show Difficult Listening on RTR FM, is a part of the core group of the Granular Synthesis Composers Collective and is a member of the artist run gallery free range.

ARTIST BIOGRPAHIES:

CHRIS ABRAHAMS was born in Oamaru, New Zealand but grew up in Sydney, Australia. He became very active in the Sydney jazz scene in the early eighties playing with modern jazz groups including Mark Simmonds’ Freeboppers and The Keys Music Orchestra. With Lloyd Swanton he formed the 60’s modern jazz-influenced The Benders in 1982. The band broke up in 1985 after having released three albums - E, False Laughter and Distance. In 1984 Chris recorded and released his first solo piano album Piano, followed in 1986 by Walk. In 1985 Chris became a founding member of the Sydney indie rock band The Sparklers. As a result of this, Chris began working regularly with the singer and songwriter Melanie Oxley. Chris collaborated with Melanie, writing songs and producing 5 albums, throughout the nineties. In 1987 he became a founding member and pianist of the meanwhile highly acclaimed Australian minimal jazz/rock trio The Necks. Chris released a third solo piano album Glow in 2001. This was followed in 2003 by Streaming, Thrown in 2004, and Play Scar in 2010. He has collaborated, in both recording and performance, with many contemporary improvising musicians including Burkhard Beins, Mike Cooper and Anthony Pateras. He performs regularly in the improvising music scenes both in Australia and Europe.

BURKHARD BEINS was born in Lower Saxony, Germany but lives in Berlin since 1995. As a composer/performer, working in the non-academic fields of experimental music, he is known for his widely abstracted use of percussion instruments in combination with selected objects and materials. Since the late 1980's he performs at internationally renowned venues and festivals throughout Europe, North America, Australia/NZ and Asia. Burkhard works solo, but is also a member of groups like Perlonex, Activity Center, Polwechsel, SLW, Trio Sowari, Phosphor, BBB, or The Sealed Knot. Furthermore he collaborates with Keith Rowe, Sven-Åke Johansson, Andrea Neumann, Chris Abrahams, John Tilbury, Charlemagne Palestine, and many others. Meanwhile Burkhard has released more than 30 CDs and LPs on labels like Zarek, Erstwhile, Hat Hut, Potlatch, Absinth or Confront. His first Solo-CD Disco Prova has been released in 2007 and combines field recordings and percussion material with digital multitracking, followed in 2009 by Structural Drift, a result of a sound art residency at Künstlerhäuser Worpswede, based on e-bowed and propelled zither, analog synth, objects and small electronic devices.

ROBIN HAYWARD was born in Brighton, England in 1969, has been based in Berlin since 1998. He has redefined the tuba’s potential both in the areas of noise and microtonality, and his compositions for other instruments reflect a similar experimental, medium-specific approach. Pieces have been written for him by such composers as Alvin Lucier and Christian Wolff. He has toured extensively both solo and in collaboration. His approach to the tuba has been documented in the solo CDs Valve Division and States of Rushing, along with various collaborative releases. Active in many contemporary music ensembles including Phosphor and Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, in 2005 he founded Zinc & Copper Works for continued research into brass instruments.

STEEV KINDWALD transmits musics based on the spirits of nature. He has passed many years living with nomadic tribals and gypsies in the deserts and mountains in various parts of South and Southeast Asia. Steev is a highly accomplished double flute Alghoza player - he not only works with the ancient traditions but also composes some of the only new music for Alghoza double flutes. Since childhood, he has played numerous kinds of Guimbarde and, for years, has worked closely with traditional Guimbarde makers in many parts of South and Southeast Asia. Steev makes many models of Guimbarde from ancient designs as well new creations. Lately he works with flute obliques from Sumatra and the Indus Valley utilizing the techniques of Multiphonic and Respiration Circular plus other surprising innovative techniques.

Yoshimitsu Ichiraku (drums and computer) has put together this very exciting and fun project which features a specially designed drum + computer system. Using impact sensors all over the drum kit, he creates a huge video deck - allowing him to use the drums as a live video controller. He appeared in the 2005 summer grand bazaar commercial for the department store Laforet Harajuku, won an honorary mention in the Digital Music division of Europe's largest media art festival - ARS Electronica - and has been active as the drummer in the band Yamaguchi, which has stirred up quite a storm of prizes and awards world wide. The DVD released in July of this year - 'DoraVideo Volume 1' - managed to violate every imaginable law, committing copyright infringement, slander, indecent exposure and has been awarded a spot in the Guiness Book of World Records for offensiveness, and went out of print just before release. At Auxxx he will reveal his brand new instrument Doranome.

Takuro Mizuta Lippit is a turntable musician working in the field of improvised and experimental music. His music focuses on the live reconstruction and "narrativization" of the phonographically amplified - the music, the sound, the technology and the past. He masterfully mixes scratching, cutting and stuttering with various records which reflect his influences - from free improvisation to hip-hop. Utilizing custom built samplers, he can capture and playback sounds at lighting speed or sculpt heavy drones. Don't expect the subtle!

Mark Sanders is a great drummer who has played with many renowned musicians from around the world including Peter Brotzmann, Derek Bailey, Myra Melford, Paul Rogers, Henry Grimes, Roswell Rudd, Trevor Watts, Tim Berne, Otomo Yoshihide, Luc Ex, Sidsel Endresen, Mahmoud Gania, in duo and quartets with Wadada Leo Smith and trios with Charles Gayle with Sirone and William Parker. His first musical experiences in the early 1980`s were with left-field rock groups such as The Delta 5, Gene loves Jezebel and more recently with Broadcast. Based in the UK - Mark has played with most of the country's major improvisers including Derek Bailey, Paul Rutherford, Howard Riley, Lol Coxhill, Philip Wachsmann, Keith Tippet, Larry Stabbins and Louis Moholo. With John Edwards Mark plays as rhythm section of choice for many musicians, notably in trios with Veryan Weston, Evan Parker, Alex Hawkins and Shabaka Hutchins. He is a member of Mathew Shipp's "London Quartet", Kris Wander's Unit, Alex Ward's "Predicate" and Spanish trio "Triatone" and also works in the projects of Mikolaj Trzaska, Steve Beresford, Gail Brand, Simon H Fell and Christian Marclay. In the late 1990's Mark started a twelve year stint with dub/world/rock bassist Jah Wobble in his projects - collaborating with Bill Laswell, Harold Budd, The Dubliners' Ronnie Drew and Lao musicians Molam Lao - touring internationally with this award winning 'Chinese Dub' and 'Japanese Dub' project! Voice, mouth, sense, center, story, memory, song, noise, body. Utterances and loops of languages morphing into each other and into mutable, knotty, sound matter. The story is told but always elusive. The voice is high pitched, broken, untrained, fearless. The sense is right in the center of the phrase, so much in your face that you stop noticing it. The memory is shattered, solarized, partly erased, partly distorted. The noise is in the body. Somewhere, somebody sings. The instrument is made of wood, rubber, bee-wax. The computer is on the side. The software has been fallaciously programmed. A microphone is needed.

Alessandro Bosetti (IT) is a sound artist, composer and performer currently based in Berlin. His main focus is in the fringe area between spoken language and music. He has created a series of highly compelling sound works where relational aesthetics meets innovative composition. Field research and interviews often build the basis for his abstract compositions along with electro-acoustic and acoustic collages, relational strategies, trained and untrained instrumental practices, vocal explorations and digital manipulations. Between 2008 and 2010 he develoed mask mirror, a speaking machine based on a max/msp patch, which he will perform with at Auxxx.

Legendary analogue electronic instrument inventor Tom Bugs comes over from Bristol with his personal BugBrand Modular setup for a discussion and performance. Having moved from musical performance, through lofi electronic machines (eg. Weevils!), the last few years have been focused on developing the BugModular system, of which there are now 30+ setups spread around the globe. The particular areas of interest for his development have been performative flow, rhythmics and portability - he has been cutting a niche furrow, allowing the machine grooves to flourish.

Coming from a musical background in playing / recording, since officially starting BugBrand in April 2005 I have been pretty much subsumed by working with analogue electronic circuitry. My work work comes from a self-taught perspective of creative engineering - reveling in the meeting of art and science, where the inner workings of analogue circuits open up to present new sonic worlds.

Mono-Poly: Modular Synthesizer

Mono-Poly aka Dennis Verschoor from aka the Noodle Chef from Rotterdam, Holland is a modular synthesizer freak. He uses something that he likes to call patch noodles, some sort of self-generating algorithms evolving with minimal and sometimes no human interaction. He faces the audience with strange sounds and recreates unexisting worlds in between technology and emotion.

Hanno Leichtmann & Andrea Neumann sind seit Mitte der neunziger Jahre fester Bestandteil des Berliner Musikgeschehens und formen seitdem innerhalb einer stetig wachsenden Gruppe innovativer Musiker den Begriff der Echzeitmusik.

Hanno Leichtmann

Hanno Leichtmann ist ein Grenzgänger zwischen den verschiedenen Musikstilen. Als (Free)Jazz-Schlagzeuger nach Berlin gekommen gründete er mit dem Cellisten Nicholas Bussmann und dem Trompeter, Sänger und Schauspieler Lars Rudolph das heute legendäre Trio Ich schwitze nie und mit Hannes Strobl das Live Techno Duo Paloma. Diese wechselnden künstlerischen Identitäten führten zu den elektronischen Projekten Static, White Hole, dem The Vulva String Quartett sowie dem Trio Groupshow (mit Jan Jelinek und Andrew Pekler). Seit 2008 spielt Leichtmann mit Hannes Strobl und David Moss wieder in einem frei improvisierenden Trio Denseland. Das Duo mit Andrea Neumann ist Hanno Leichtmanns neueste Kollaboration in diesem Umfeld.

Andrea Neumann

Andrea Neumann erforscht das Klavier nach neuen Klangmöglichkeiten und reduziert es dabei auf die Saiten, den Resonanzboden und den gusseisernen Rahmen. Auf Basis dieses sogenannten "Innenklaviers" wurde von dem Berliner Klavierbauer Bernd Bittmann eine Spezialinstrument entwickelt. Auf diesem demontierten und verfremdeten Klavierrest entwickelt sie mit Hilfe von elektronischer Verstärkung und Präparation eigene Spieltechniken und Klänge. Neben ihrer aktuellen Kollaboration mit Hanno Leichtmann arbeitet Andrea Neumann u.a. im Duo mit Sabine Ercklentz, in dem Ensemble Les Femmes Savenates, im Trio Barcelona Series (Sven-Ake Johansson, Axel Dörner) und im Berliner Splitter Orchester. Konzert- und Festivalauftritte in Europa, den USA, Kanada, Argentinien, Russland, Australien und Japan. Seit 2000 Mitorganisatorin der Reihe „Labor Sonor“ für Experimentelle Musik, Film und Performance in Berlin. 2008 Stipendiatin in der Villa Aurora in Los Angeles 2008 Auszeichnung des Prix Ars Elektronika für die Video-Performance „Videobrücke Berlin – Stockholm (5 Punkt 1) in Zusammenarbeit mit Sabine Ercklentz

Visionary Ira Cohen's legendary 1968 film The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda is the only film that can truly be called "psychedelic". A wild voyage conceived in three parts: The Opium Dream, Shaman and Heavenly Blue Mylar Pavilions, an alchemical journey born out of common consciousness - culminating in the akashic bindu drop swirling in the sky's reflected azure. A head-on surrealist film composed of jewels, gold, smoke and transformative imagery. The film stars, amongst others, the wild Australian artist Vali Myers.

The Poet Louise Landes Levi will offer a very special reading for this occassion. LLL met Ira Cohen first through his contributions to American's Abroad, Vol II (edited by Lynne Tillman, assisted by LLL & never published) ca.1974. Then, at the home, on the Weesperzijde of Simon Vinkenoog. The first of many performances (at the MelkWeg with Heathcote Williams) and other collaborations (for example with Cold Turkey Press) followed soon after.

LLL will be present at this event to introduce the poet's odyssey - Morocco of the 1960's, India & Nepal of the 1970's, Europe the 1980's & the inevitable return, in Ira's case, to Manhattan's Upper West Side at the end of the last millenium through to the present moment.

In 1968 The Living Theatre triumphantly returned to America from years of self-imposed exile in Europe with their theatrical breakthrough "Paradise Now". The play introduces the practice of collective creation resulting in a shared voyage of spontaneous creation, of a temporary anarchist collective- free from the enslavements of war, violence, the State, money and the self.

Gets involved in the improvised music scene and lots of traditional and electronic music, published CD, in between three solo doublebass CDs. Composes music for tv and dancetheatre and a house opera for Berghain. Art direction of various concertseries in Italy and Germany. Concert and festival appearances in EU, USA, Canada, Japan, Israel and Russia. Since 2008 he freelances for Meta Design in conception and production. Clayton Thomas

Clayton Thomas is a double bassist and grass roots organiser working in the broad spectrum of improvised and experimental music. He is Australian, but lives in Berlin.

"I'm trying to work out a physical activity equally engaged in electronic and acoustic music aesthetics, while maintaining the kind of transitional and transformative energy of the music that changed my life. I draw inspiration from creative music of all eras, happily learning from and engaging with improvisers, sound artists, composers and thinkers alive and kicking in the 21st century.

"I have been inspired and pushed by many great musicians, but would especially thank my first teachers Wilber Morris and Peter Kowald, and Jon Rose, Jim Denley, Andrew Meisel, Cooper-Moore, Tony Buck and Hollis Taylor for doing some real work on the topic. "

Improviser, guitarist and constructor HAN-EARL PARK (박한얼) works from/within/around traditions of fuzzily idiomatic, on occasion experimental, mostly open improvised musics, sometimes engineering theater, sometimes inventing ritual. He feels the gravitational pull of collaborative, multi-authored contexts, and has performed in clubs, theaters, art galleries, concert halls, and (ad-hoc) alternative spaces in Denmark, England, Ireland, The Netherlands, Scotland and the USA. He is involved in ongoing collaborations with Bruce Coates, and with Franziska Schroeder, fifteen year long associations with Alex Fiennes and Murray Campbell. Recent performances include ensemble Mathilde 253 (Park, Charles Hayward and Ian Smith) with Lol Coxhill, a duo concert with Paul Dunmall, a trio with Kato Hideki and Katie O’Looney, an improvisative meeting with Thomas Buckner and Jesse Ronneau, and the performance of Pauline Oliveros’ ‘Droniphonia’ alongside the composer. He has appeared at festivals including Sonic Acts (Amsterdam), the Center for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology Festival (California), dialogues festival (Edinburgh), Sonorities (Belfast) and VAIN Live Art (Oxford). Park founded and curates Stet Lab, a monthly improvised music space in Cork, Ireland, and teaches improvisation at the UCC School of Music.

RICHARD BARRETT is equally active in electronic free improvisation and notated composition. Recent compositions have been premiered by the London Sinfonietta and the Symphonie-Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, and in 2010 he has performed at the Venice Biennale, Inventionen (Berlin), Jazz em Agosto (Lisbon), Spark (Minneapolis), Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ (Amsterdam), MusikTriennale Köln and elsewhere. He is currently a guest professor at the Instituut voor Sonologie in Den Haag, where he leads a workshop in electroacoustic improvisation. Current work in progress includes CONSTRUCTION, a two-hour composition for voices, twenty instruments and electronics, which is the latest result of his twenty-year collaboration with the Elision Ensemble and whose premiere is planned for November 2011. He and Paul Obermayer have been working together as the electronic duo FURT since 1986 and formed the electroacoustic octet fORCH in 2005. He also performs regularly with vocalist Ute Wassermann, in the Evan Parker Electroacoustic Ensemble and in many other contexts, and has recorded for NMC, Matchless, Unsounds, ECM, Creative Sources, Psi and others.

Jaap Pieters

Jaap Pieters (Enschede, 1955) grew up in Almelo and is known as „The Eye of Amsterdam“. He taught Yoga in cities across the Netherlands and worked in various organic food stores. Since 1977 Jaap Pieters has been living in Amsterdam and he has been engaged in photography and film since the 1980s. All of his films are shot on Super8 – at first because it was easy and later on because the aesthetics became important to him. For a few years now Pieters has been setting up exhibitions in the field of installations where film and photography share equal parts. In his films Jaap Pieters is interested in the boundary between film and photography. To bring photographs to life so that the viewer will experience the field of tension between moving and still images and the extent to which the two are connected. His films are made with a minimal use of equipment and minimal manipulation. Pieters' film programmes include portraits of homeless people, who have deeply touched the filmmaker with their individualism, and also his so-called “abstract” films, in which he has mostly shot simple movements detached from a context exploring meaning and function.

Layers and loops of processed sounds derived from resuscitated vital organs extracted from the guts of dead electronics found lying in the gutters throughout the streets of Berlin. Experimental sound in a genuine sense of experimental sound, that being unknown results, improvisation using uncertain parameters, and an openness to any outcome. The focus is on sonic textures with a light shade of minimalist electronic aesthetic. Live sets consist of dirty real-time texture assembly and electrical improvisation using self-built instruments, induction coils, motors, and effects.

20 February 1909, Marinetti publishes his futurist manifesto in the French newspaper Le Figaro. 100 years later, as modern and contemporary history conform in all facts and points to the Futurists visions, we see emerging a new culture and a new art all over the world, the art of the Slow Future. In 2009 Slow Future celebrates the End of the Fetishism of Speed and Futurist Inheritance, with as landmark the 19th and 20th of February.

On February 19th and 20th Auxxx and Pierre Mansire presents two evenings with international artists who have a connection to the concept of Slow Future, even though they are working in many different ways. They share certain characteristics, like an eye for organic development perhaps, or the unfolding of a sound into music, the fluid outcroppings of explosive energy, the call and response within one body and its living relationship to the surrounding architecture. We present these artists and their art as the representatives of a strong current, mostly hidden underneath our culture. A current reaching out towards our Slow Future.

Guru Punk author re-arrives in Amsterdam for a very special evening at Zaal 100!

International poet, classical sarangi musician, scholar, and translator of Rene Daumal and Henri Michaux, Louise Landes Levi has traveled the globe for three decades. Her poetry books include, Banana Baby (Supernova, 2006), Avenue A & 9th Street (Shivastan, 2004), Chorma (Porto dei Santi, 2000) Guru Punk, (Cool Grove Press, 1999), Sweet on my Lips, Love poems of Mira Bai (Cool Grove Press, 1997), The House Lamps Have Been Lit (Supernova, 1996), Extinctions, (Left Hand Books, 1993), and Concerto, (City Lights, Accordian Series, 1988). Rene Daumal’s Rasa was published by New Directions in 1982 and most recently, Toward Totality (Vers La Completude) & Selected Works 1929-1973 of Henri Michaux (Shivastan, 2006) and Toward Totality I / Vers La Completude (Longhouse, 2006). Reviews, essays and poems have been published online in Big Bridge, Jacket, and Rain Taxi, among other publications.

Louise will read from recent work, including:

CHRIS CORSANO

Chris Corsano has gained a well-earned reputation as one of the hardest-working drummers around. Equally at home with intense kinetic explosions of energy and concentrated near-silence, he effortlessly flows from one idea to the next, always sympatico with his fellow musicians. He has recorded and gigged with, among others, Paul Flaherty, Thurston Moore, Jessica Rylan, Jim O'Rourke, Matt Heyner, Michael Flower, Nels Cline, Jandek, Greg Kelly, Daniel Carter, Six Organs of Admittance, Evan Parker, Sunburned Hand Of Man, Okkyung Lee, Wally Shoup, MV&EE, Keiji Haino, Dredd Foole, Vampire Belt, Joe McPhee, Björk, Carlos Giffoni, Akira Sakata, Christina Carter and Heather Leigh Murray.

After moving from western Massachusetts, USA to Manchester, England in 2005 and then Edinburgh, Scotland a year later, Corsano focused on developing an expanded solo percussion music of his own, incorporating sax reeds, violin strings and bows, pot lids, adhesive tape and other household devices into his drumkit. In February 2006, he released his first solo recording, The Young Cricketer, and toured the UK opening for the mighty acoustic guitarist Jack Rose. In 2007 and '08 he's been drumming on Björk's Volta world tour as well as continuing his own projects.

On July 17 Auxxx presents an eclectic evening at OT 301 with the electro-acoustic duo Seeded Plain from Nebraska, DJ Morsanek and the bands The Wench and Black Napkins from Amsterdam.

Seeded Plain from Omaha, Nebraska makes “new sculptured alchemist sounds” and consist of Bryan Day and Jay Kreimer (home-made instruments / electronics) . The Wench is a new improvisation band with Alfredo Genovesi (guitar) John Dikeman (sax) en Ivo Bol (live sampling). The “crossunder“ trio Back Napkins; Sanne van Hek (trumpet) Jasper Stadhouders (guitar) en Gerri Jäger (drums), finds inspiration in the speed of life in modern society. On this last Alchemistic Cabaret of the season, Gongs and other bronze, copper and silver instruments play the lead role. Percussionist / drummer Michael Vatcher and Diego Espinosa share their passion for gongs and Cosmic Scene - trumpetplayer Michel Varekamp’s pet project - plays further along the path started by Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, mixing funk, jazz and psychedelic dark noise. In between sets The Burkens / Kooger Vibe explores the vastness beyond the outer rim of musical space, where jazz meets sonic soundscapes. All this will be enlightened by Action Lighting by Pierre Mansire. And the evening ends with the strange trippy dancemusic from past and future by DJ Phil. It began in the late 50's in Paris experimenting with tape loops with Terry Riley and doing music for performance works with William Burroughs. The early 60's found him in England working with teenaged Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Kevin Ayers and Hugh Hopper, which eventually became Soft Machine. Along with Pink Floyd they were the most influential bands in the UK Psychedelic scene of 1966-67, and Jimi Hendrix's favorite band. Daevid left Soft Machine late in1967 and relocated to Paris where he eventually formed Gong, who are regarded by many as the greatest psychedelic band ever and were the first band signed to Virgin Records after Mike Oldfield.

Over 40 Years ago Daevid Allen founded Soft Machine in order to inject the rock world with the jazz and beat poetry he loves. He was with that band for a year and a half before his being denied entry back in England put them on separate paths: Soft Machine in one direction and Daevid back to Paris to form Gong.

Now all these decades later Daevid's band University of Errors revisit those psychedelic days and the songs of the original Soft Machine. Daevid sings them with a renewed passion and joy for the new century.

2008 finds University of Errors doing extensive touring to support their releases "Jet Propelled Photographs" (Cuneiform CD RUNE 188) and the brand new debut DVD "Daevid Allen's University Of Errors Play The Soft Machine: Live in Amsterdam 2006" (Voiceprint unGONGDVD001).

The core of University of Errors, Daevid, Josh Pollock, and Michael Clare are celebrating their 10th Year together and 6th year with drummer Warren Huegel.

The existence of University of Errors is a fluke. There was never an intention of starting a band, it seems like "fate" decreed that Daevid needed a new band based in the US. The core line up of the band has always been Daevid, guitarist Josh Pollock and bassist Michael Clare. Warren Huegel joined in 2002 for the European tour and he remains to this day providing an amazing unihibited youthful energy of crazy beautiful drumming.

The music of University of Errors is very much rock with influences from psychedelic and space to punk and jazz. A multi-generational band, the musicians range in age from 30 to 70 and each brings the influences of his generation to the overall sound making for a very unique band.

Wrikken is a project of Ivo Bol and Joris van Perlo, who have made music together since they were 15. Wrikken originated in the Dutch city of Groningen where they played in cult bands like Soom, Plan Kruutntoone, Wastewell and G.I. Magnetic Inflatable Carrot plane. In 1996 they composed music for strings, saxophone and electric guitar. After 1996 their music has become more and more electronic. The music of Wrikken is constructed during an ongoing process of redefining their own sound, based mostly on samples made from their own music. Influences are Minimal music, Coil, Beefheart, David Lynch. Wrikken collaborated with several theatremakers, filmmakers and visual artists. They have been touring in Germany, the USA and Holland. Wrikken will perform a live soundtrack that is composed for Maya Deren’s film “Ritual In Transfigured Time” (1945-46). Stichting Mixer released their debut single.

De SoundFloor is een electronische tapvloer waarmee de tapdanseres zelf haar geluiden kan besturen. Tapdanser Marije Nie droomt al jaren over dit electroaccoustische instrument. Het is een instrument waarmee Marije niet alleen haar eigen geluid kan manipuleren, maar dat ook een interactieve geluidsomgeving kan maken op basis van het tapgeluid. Deze incarnatie van de SoundFloor is ontwikkeld door studenten van de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht en TU Eindhoven en is nu al een veelbelovende start op een avontuurlijke weg.

His AUXXX sets are an attempt at surreal sonic alchemy, synthesizing blunted beats, Osaka-style noise, machine music, free improvisation and a junkbox of found sound into edgy party music that doubles as textured ambience.

Ausweis make surrealistic soundscapes with strangely possessed voices and sounds which emerge from trance and dream states. Their improvised music plays with tensions which seem to exist between acoustic, electronic, composed and improvised musics. Ulrike Helmholz will explore the "speaking in tongues" theme through the rhytmical recitation of texts by Hölderlin, Brecht, Kerouac, Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Genet, Dauthendey and Japanese Haiku poets. Her mantra-like looping of these words will be accompanied by colourful soundscapes created by Pit Schmidt and Ralf Meinz on saxopohone, electronic percussion and computers. Ausweis have a broad and intuitive approach to rhythmical and musical structure, every song takes the listener to a new world... These unique musicians from Tubingen have worked with many other artists including Japanese Butoh dancer Mitsutaka Ishii, German krautrockers Faust, improvisers Otomo Yoshihide, David Moss, Elliot Sharp and Franz Hautzinger, the contemporary music ensemble Zeitkratzer and American legends such as Lou Reed and Ike Willis - as alchemical artists they distil their experience from such a wide field into pure gems of strange abstraction!

Berlin MC meets Amsterdam DJ for a late night mash up!

Quio is a Berlin based MC, singer and performer. She started MCing in 1997 as MC Looney Tunes. She performed with Drum' n Bass and HipHop DJs in Berlin and throughout Europe. In 1998 she met DJ G-Serve from Audiotaxi in WTF together with DJ Christine Lang. They organized parties under the title "On Bass Tracks". Quio is still part of a radio show on Berlin's former Pirate Radio Station TWEN FM, named Underground Essentials. In 1999 she met AGF when they performed on the same bill in a club. Various collaborations ensued and in 2003 they founded Quio. 2004 saw them release their first 12" on AGF Producktion and after that a full length album entitled „...like oooh!“. In September 2007 her new album "Phiu" was released. For the AUXXX alchemistic cabaret evening she will perform together as an MC with resident Auxxx DJ - Marcelle.

It's 2007 now, and they're still going strong, and forward, in every possible direction.

Black Galaxy is a new project from Birmingham-based musician, sound artist and writer Nicholas Bullen. Bullen was one of the original founder members of Napalm Death in 1981, performing as vocalist and bassist and recording on their classic 1st album - "Scum". Since then, he was also a member of Scorn and has worked with many musicians (including Bill Laswell and Tim Wright), along with developing work as a sound artist which has been shown at a variety of venues including Tate Britain, Art Basel, ICA and the Staten Island ferry in New York. He started his own label - Monium in 2007. Black Galaxy is a collaboration with fellow Birmingham sound artist and musician Simon Mabbott - the project operates in a variety of fields from distorted breakbeats to non-rhythmic soundscapes. For this concert they will be joined by Kreepa musicians John Richards and Hilary Jeffery, together they will play a version of a set they played with great success at this years Sonar Festival in Barcelona.

A Super 8 camera films at Waterlooplein, Rokin, Kinkerstraat and side streets where both police, anarchists, punks and tourists experienced chaos in their own way...

"TRANSFIGURED TIME TRAVEL"

Debut of the new psychedelic improc rock trio formed by the free improvising electronic guitarist Alfredo Genovesi. Using an array of pedal effects, found objects, samplers and external sound sources, Alfredo constructs multi-layered soundscapes that enable him to fluctuate between diverse and colourful soundworlds. His music moves between ambient soundscapes, psychedelic riffing and noise. His musical activity includes free improvisation in all manner of combinations and with many international improvisors such as Keith Rowe, Oren Marshall and Lol Coxhill, live music for theatre including work with Zaoum / Sulayman Al-Bassam Theatre (touring the Middle East and Asia) and a composer/director of ensembles such as the Resonance Radio Orchestra. Since arriving in Amsterdam in 2007 Alfredo has commenced work with a range of choreographers and dance projects including work with Katie Duck / Magpie MusicDance Company and Vincent Cacialona. In August 2007 he performed with Japanese dancer Makiko Ito at the Muziekgebouw aan 't Ij during the presentation of the Amsterdamprijs voor de Kunsten for Overtoom 301. He has also been very active in the Amsterdam improvised music scene playing with Ig Henneman, Han Buhrs, Alan Purves, Michael Vatcher and Wilbert de Joode amongst others. For AUXXX Alfredo will present his new trio with a classic guitar, bass and drums line up consisting of:

Amsterdam Underkurrent XXX - AUXXX

"a new channel for unconventional artists"

AUXXX is a series of regular events at OT301 (Overtoom 301) in Amsterdam showcasing local and international artists. We are interested in booking and putting on events for people active in the following areas: installation art, improvised and composed music, writing, spoken word / rap, performance art, film / video, animation, electronics and new media, bands and djs. We are particularly interested in mixed bills where new combinations of approaches are encouraged. We aim to bring together artists whose work taps into a strong creative undercurrent running through many genres and scenes. We provide these artists and their audience with an open and flexible performance platform, as well as a vibrant meeting place. The name "Amsterdam Underkurrent XXX" reflects the city in which we are based, Amsterdam, a "floating city" built on water, historically renowned for its progressive outlook, a city of experiment and openness, an international port and meeting place where new ideas can emerge, many of which find expression through unconventional channels and hidden paths. By tapping into these (under)currents our events will open up new areas of dialogue and challenge existing notions of what it means to be xxxperimental - watch this blog!

In 'Dorothy Squeezed' Paul improvises live electronic music with samples from both the "Wizard" and the "Road Works" squeezing the original 98 minute video into a frenetic 30 minute trip...

AUXXX will continue to program events at Overtoom 301 during 2007, presenting programs of music and dance, film with live soundtracks and spoken word / rap and hip hop. The nights we organise will feature a wide a range of radical and new work followed by an Auxxx Disco where resident and guest djs will play underground music for late night dancing! Through these endeavours we will be making a positive and unusual contribution to the growing arts scene in Amsterdam and bringing a very broad audience to Overtoom 301.

The Kleber Claux Memorial Singers are an Australian duo featuring members of ninetynine, The Hatchetmen and The Diving Bell who play anarcho casio pop and analogue synth driven punk. With music designed to set the masses' hearts afire their performance includes keyboard pop versions of Crass, Subhumans and other anarcho classics as well as visuals and plenty of surprises.

USER >

Hailing from the gothic isle of Tasmania, USER creates Subterranean ambient studio explorations created with guitar, effects, field recordings, and appropriated sound. USER mixes and manipulates this live ranging from sublime atmospherics to stoner doom on a broken tape machine, no input on an obsolete mixer to concert hall crescendo. A sound project by Australian artist Scot Cotterell, USER has been presented at empty punk bars and packed concert halls around Oz.

IAIN MCINTYRE

The A Warning project first took form whilst Iain McIntyre (ninetynine, Thee Stag Knights, The Hatchetmen) was living in London in 2004. Inspired by the film work of composers such as John Carpenter and John Cameron and gifted the use of a three track recorder and a Holiday Genie organ McIntyre crafted a soundtrack to a “lost” dystopian film set in the US of the Nixonian 70s. Completing work on the soundtrack using a number of analogue synthesizers during 2005 and 2006 McIntyre invited a number of Australian musicians to contribute vocals, strings, piano and drums to the project. Alongside work on the musical side of the project McIntyre raided various video and online archives for stock footage with which to create the surreal “lost” movie the soundtrack accompanies. 15 separate clips have been put together to tell the story of a shell shocked and alcoholic journalist who is forced into private detective work following a 1972 military coup within the US. Traveling across America in search of the runaway daughter of a high ranking politician our hero experiences saucer landings, fish falls and earthquakes. Are these phenomena merely the result of his fast deteriorating psyche or are they part of some wider conspiracy involving his quarry?

PAUL GLAZIER

'Dorothy Squeezed'

To make the "OZ" theme complete Paul Glazier will present a new version of his film "Yellow Brick Road Works". The material for this work, both audio and visual, was drawn from the classic 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz". Taking a figurative magnifying-glass to the original film "Yellow Brick Road Works" examined the building-blocks of this icon and unfurled a new road to Oz and back. In 'Dorothy Squeezed' Paul will improvise live electronic music with samples form both the "Wizard" and the "Road Works" squeezing the original 98 minute video into a frenetic 30 minute trip!

Paul Dunmall is one of the world's most respected free saxophone players, he has played with Alice Coltrane, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, Danny Thompson, Keith Tippett, London Jazz Composers Orchestra, Mujician and Soft Machine Legacy. His label Duns Limited Edition has over 50 releases and documents many of his ongoing musical encounters with countless improvising musicians.
