FELIPE WALLER

Felipe Waller began filming super 8 animations and videos in 2003. It all started after he witnessed Martha Colburn execute her eye-popping animating techniques. Since then he has experimented with different techniques, most of them rooted in an analogue approach. Experimental filmmaking has enriched his main activity - musical composition.

JAAP PIETERS

Jaap Pieters grew up in Almelo and is known as "The Eye of Amsterdam". Since 1977 Jaap Pieters has been living in Amsterdam and has been engaged in photography and film since the 1980s. All of his films are shot on the - soon to be lost format -Super8. For a few years now Pieters has been setting up exhibitions in the field of installations where film and photography share equal parts. In his films Jaap Pieters is interested in the boundary between film and photography. To bring photographs to life so that the viewer will experience the field of tension between moving and still images and the extent to which the two are connected. His films are made with a minimal use of equipment and minimal manipulation. Pieters' film programmes include portraits of homeless people, who have deeply touched the filmmaker with their individualism, and also his so-called “abstract” films, in which he has mostly shot simple movements detached from a context exploring meaning and function.

JEFFREY BABCOCK

Jeffrey Babcock is a filmmaker, performance artist, writer, film programmer and cultural activist. He studied cinema under film-theorist David Bordwell and with experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage. Since 1984 he has travelled extensively and mystically as a performance artist in Europe and many other countries including Russia, Mongolia and Japan. Many of the performances dealt with the theme of anti-censorship. During the 1990s he collaborated with filmmaker Ian Kerkhof in creating an eccentric array of transgressive films for the Dutch cinemas and television. Around the turn of the century Jeffrey shifted towards writing books (including THE CORPSE-GRINDERS OF BERLIN published by Pine Slopes press) and conducting interviews with film directors such as Kenneth Anger. Because of the sad state of cinema culture in Amsterdam, in recent years he has become an underground cinema activist, helping to create a circuit of alternative cinemas in which he gives introductions that set films in a biographical, historical, aesthetic or philosophical context. He is a programmer at about seven underground cinemas at the moment. Together with Polish graphic artist Agata Winska he also published a book called SCREENING AS AN IDEOLOGY (2011).
