FB EVENT

SATURDAY 23 NOVEMBER @ 20:30

Encounter Culture is a new initiative co-organised by ausland and auxxx to open live debate between European cities, bringing together music with other disciplines that shape and reflect city culture.

ENCOUNTER CULTURE #2 - DANUBE BLUES

Capital cities in the Central European Danube region have a special atmosphere of nostalgia and melancholy. Historic centres like Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava are filled with this special atmosphere of decay – moody, crumbling and haunted. These grand locations, once real centres for culture and learning, start to appear lost and distinctly out of place in the high-tech, fast moving, digitised, glass and steel worlds of the twenty first century. Many original qualities of these cities now only seem to function for a culture of tourist-based nostalgia.

The recent phenomenon of the extreme right in Hungary directly affects the life of artists trying to live and work in the region, it has caused a mass exodus but also an upsurge of new oppositional and creative energy. The results of this current situation are not only negative, the attempts at oppression are being met with resistance and raising of awareness of the importance of alternative and open forms of cultural expression.

For this special event organised by ausland together with auxxx, four Central European artists have been invited to perform together their own improvised “Danube Blues”. Additionally they will reflect on and discuss their personal experiences of living in and leaving the region...

ANDREY ISKANOV

Photographer, director, visual effects designer, make-up artist and actor, Andrey Iskanov is a true author-creator. His fascination for the surreal and fantastic is omnipresent in all of his works, consisting of four feature films to date. Citing movies by directors such as David Lynch, Shinya Tsukamoto, Dario Argento and Andrei Tarkovsky as sources of inspiration, Andrey Iskanov develops mostly non-linear narratives, wrapped in fluorescent aesthetics. This former medical student masterfully dissects the human being and reveals degradation, suffering and repulsion. The very violent and gore depictions in his films have attracted censorship and limited their theatrical exposure to a minimum.

Hilary Jeffery is a composer and trombonist, based in Amsterdam and Berlin. As a trombone player Hilary is known for his genre-bending abilities, crossing between different styles and areas of music including contemporary avant-garde (Ensemble Hiatus, zeitkratzer, The Barton Workshop), rock, techno and electronica (Germ, Sand, Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation), jazz, funk and pop (Franz Hautzinger’s Third Eye, High Birds, Jimi Tenor), improvised music and free jazz (EARR Ensemble, Splitter Orchester, Apa Ini and countless ad hoc groups). Music has been Hilary’s main activity since 1990 which started with a journey to the Sahara Desert, accompanied by a trombone. This journey and the sense of silent-space experienced there has been a continuous influence on his work ever since. Since 2005 he began to express this clearly with a new group called Lysn which plays music for inner-space, composed using new notations, unusual instrumentation, drones and live electronics. Hilary has received several composition commissions including pieces for Slagwerk Den Haag, David Kweksilber Big Band, GRM Acousmonium, Lysn and Apa Ini. His contribution to music is available in different settings on various labels including Aquarellist, Col Legno, FMR, Dilemma Records, Important Records, New World Records, Soul Jazz Records and Sub Rosa.

RAPHAEL VANOLI

photo Maarten Mooijman

Rapahael Vanoli is a guitar player, improviser and composer based in Amsterdam. His solo music is based exclusively on electric guitar sounds which are generated live. Vanoli has a unique playing technique where he manages to exaggerate the richness of the tiniest sound particles within the instrument, making them audible in an often overwhelming fashion. By heavily boosting the volume; Vanoli's guitar turns into an extremely sensitive object on which he blows, caresses (with a feather), grazes with his lips/beard and gently hits and scratches. With his feet he controls 7 very different amplifiers (from a large powerful bass to toy-like battery mini-amps) which allows him to thoroughly explore a whole spectrum of frequencies in a very precise way. His equipment also gives him directional control of the sound for the audience (pan control). His music takes the form of uneven telluric sound-scapes. Highly emotional and disruptive - much closer to a Frostian electronic universe than the preconceived landing zone of a conventional electric guitar. Although at times loud and extreme - Vanoli’s music is especially meditative and body friendly. It hits the soul with waves of empathy. Raphael Vanoli is half of electronic post-rock duet Knalpot and founder of noisy African space-dub band Stolpernova. He has played with musicians such as Fred Frith, Martin Brandlmayr (Radian), Luc Ex, Franz Hautzinger, Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson (Mùm, Sigur Rós), Jozef Dumoulin, Manu Delago or Louis Sclavis amongst many many others.
