JOZEF DUMOULIN TRIO

Considering his birthplace, Belgium, the place where he now lives and works, France, and Germany, where he has studied, one can say that Jozef Dumoulin is part of these young generations of european artists used to cross the frontiers. His ability to mix different musical genres is not voluntary, but perfectly natural. John Taylor’s student, he ended up doing jazz passing through the pop and jazz roundabouts of the 60s and 70s – among other musical styles.

Despite his exceptional talent as a piano player, he voluntarily swaps his piano over a fender rhodes that he fits out with a number of pedal effects. Noticed for his abilities as a composer and his research on sound, he collaborated with different bands and artists: Octurn, Magic Malik, Franck Vaillant Benzine, Dre Pallemaerts, Reggie Washington Trio Tree, Othin Spake, Narcissus Quartet, Maak’s Spirit, Aka Moon or Christophe Wallemme.

After his first album Trees are always right’s release in 2009, Jozef Dumoulin takes the plunge and embarks on a trio adventure with Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle, Fantomas, John Zorn, Andrew D’Angelo) on bass and Eric Thielemans (Lidlboj, EARR, A Snare is a Bell, Maak’s Spirit) on drums, which gave birth to his second album Rainbow Body. In the latter, Jozef Dumoulin carries on his search for the right balance at the borders of electronic sounds, experimental music, pop and jazz. Presenting mainly Jozef Dumoulin’s compositions, Rainbow Body is a fascinating and unclassifiable album which reveals the universe of this unequalled, infinitely multifaceted musician.

MORE INFO...

BIRCHALL / BRICE / MARKS

David Birchall started playing the guitar in 1994 and has continued to ever since, gigging and touring extensively with a variety of groups in the UK, France, Holland, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Palestine and Denmark. Music he has been involved with creating has been played on BBC1, BBC Radio1, BBC 6 Music and Resonance FM. Realising a few years ago he spent most of his time trying to improvise within the musics he played whether structured or open, he has since consciously tried to locate improvisation at the core of his musical work. He has also made performances with dancers and performance artists at the Lowry Theatre in Salford, the Greenroom in Manchester and the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol.

www.davidmbirchall.wordpress.com

Olie Brice is a double bassist from London he has performed with Ingrid Laubrock, Javier Carmona, Veryan Weston, Marks Sanders, Alexander Hawkins, Gail Brand, Evan Parker, Paul Dunmall, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Lol Coxhill, Pat Thomas, Mulatu Astatke, Mikolaj Trzaska, Steve Noble, Alex Ward, Hannah Marshall, Steve Reid and Steve Swell, among many others.

"Brice makes the entire body of his bass sing. He has the ability to deliver a fractal line that is as purposeful as any by the great jazz bassists, but to do so within an entirely abstract setting." (Brian Morton, Point of Departure).

oliebrice.wordpress.com

Phillip Marks has been performing and promoting improvised music in Manchester, the UK and Europe since the mid-80s. He is a founder member of Bark!, a member of the Grew Trio and has performed with Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Phil Waschman, Marcio Mattos, Alan Tomlinson, LaDonna Smith, Mick Beck and many others.

"Mark's percussion work shapes and holds it together. His drumming drives the music along and gives it it its pulse - enough indeed for the publicity to describe it as 'James Brown meets the spirit of Modernism!' not a phrase often attributed to improvised music." (All About Jazz).

MICHELLE YOM

Michelle Yom is a flautist and composer known for her innovative technique, unique vocabulary, and penchant for improvising. She is dedicated to expanding the range of musical expression through extended technique, improvisation, and electro-acoustic sound environment. She received an M.A. in music from New York University in 2006 and has been creating experimental music since.

In 2009, Doggebi, a drum/flute improv duo collaboration with SPIKE the Percussionist led to the release of *Penetralia of the Moment* (Noiz Temple Records), a full length album that depicts sections of Thomas Pynchon’s *Gravity’s Rainbow*. In 2010, a residency with Labotanica led to *Back To Imagined Spaces*, an installation that explores the relationship between spirituality and human physiological perception. *What Is Now*, an audience participatory video installation that explores the malleable nature of human time perception, was exhibited at The Foundry in 2010 Art Crawl. In 2012, she received a fellowship from Houston Arts Alliance to create *Falcor*, a multi-media work fusing sound with movement.

As a collaborative performer, Yom has performed in sound series Brave New Waves, Binarium Productions, They Who Sound, Resonant Interval, and Nameless Sound, as well as with CoRE Suspension Troop, Texas Dance Improvisation Festival 2010, and Parallel Universe Art Exhibition 2011. She has also performed in Korea, France, Italy, and has extensively toured Australia and New Zealand.

Grapeshade is dedicated to expanding the relationship between music/sound, dance/movement improvisation, dedicated to a form of communication which avoids the concreteness. with this it opens spaces to imagination and interpretation in order to work against a populistic way of explanation. simpler: grapeshade wants to explore the field in between black and white, good and bad, rich and poor and millions of other examples of polarization. Based in Berlin, started exploring the small alternative spaces in the city in 2009, among those are Sowieso, Ausland, Farbfernseher, Das Hotel, Miss Hecker, Exploratorium, Quite Cue, Wendel, Galerie Mazzoli, LaborGras, shared continuously their work with the music and dance followers in informal settings making most of their gatherings public, developed further interest for site specific performances and started touring, performed in a natural cave, billiard hall, old water tower, on stage at Radial System V, outdoors at Tempelhof, also at the Elias Canetti Center and the Watertower Festival in Bulgaria in July 2011 with support from the Goethe Institut.

The Nàrwal is •
• a story told in a few steps of an almost mythical animal. The spiraled tooth that grows out of it’s forefront into the air, is a sensory organ. Moving in big ponds through the cold waters of the arctic, it uses echolocation and other senses, diving at great depths.
• a multimedia performance that tries to stimulate new perceptions through the use of non-conventional interaction between different sensory realms. An experiment to enhance our awareness of the soundscapes around us. New repertoire for the Nàrwal is prepared at slow pace, collecting short compositions that use different sensors. Every time we denounce how we use a sensor to capture data from the world, we also announce how we see ourselves detached from it (borrowing from a concept by brazilian educator and philosopher, Paulo Freire).
• a pocket-concert, to be presented in a small room with a quadraphonic system — four boxes arranged around the public — and projections on the ceiling. Music-videos tie in the compact repertoire, where sensors and different gestural control interfaces for the real-time electronics help to expand sounds from daily objects and situations.

Sam Salem is an acousmatic composer living and working in Manchester, UK. He recently completed his PhD at the University of Manchester under the supervision of David Berezan and Ricardo Climent. I’m mainly interested in composing acoumsatic music exclusively with field-recorded sound. He currently teaches at Leeds College of Music. Sam has received the follwing awards: "Public Bodies" was awarded in Musica Viva 2010, "Dead Poets" received an Honorary Mention in Musica Nova 2010, and he received 2nd Prize in Espace du Son 2010.

for this event Sam will present his composition "Public Bodies" (winner of Música Viva Competition 2010) :

A work in three movements. Sonically, the main musical discourse is between the following elements: a human voice (which represents the Self or Inner), the sounds of the city (which represents the Other or Outer) and harmonic and rhythmic material derived from the two. Public Bodies explores the theme of voyeurism, both intentional and accidental. We are private bodies caught in the public gaze, we see things that we would rather not, we are simultaneously hungry for attention and yet crave privacy: we are always seen and yet never watched.

Richard Scott is a composer and improviser residing in the UK and working regularly in Berlin and Amsterdam. He has been composing electroacoustic music and performing improvised music for over 25 years, performing and recording with artists such as Grutronic, Twinkle³, Clive Bell and Evan Parker. His work has been featured on BBC Radio 3 and 4, International Computer Music Conference, London Jazz Festival, Bratislava NEXT Festival of Advanced Music, Sonorities Belfast, Berlin Interaktion Improvised Music Festival and MANTIS Electroacoustic Music Festival. Manchester. He is a long term artistic resident at STEIM, a part-time Lecturer in Music at Lancaster University and co-curator of two concert series in Berlin: AUXXX Berlin and Basic Electricity.

for this event Richard will present his composition "Resonant Bodies" :

A continuous three movement electroacoustic piece drawing from the sounds of female voices, analogue synthesizer and kalimba. The resonating bodies in the title refer to the body of the kalimba, to the human body as it exists in the voice and to the resonating body of water, especially in the myriad of ways that it refracts and transforms light. One technique I have explored here is that of analysing and extracting data from videos of water moving. With this method I was able to capture variations in the effect of light dancing across a moving body of water and employed this data as a modulation source for the processing of vocal and percussion samples.

MICHAEL VORFELD
LIGHT BULB MUSIC

Michael Vorfeld, musician and visual artist, based in Berlin, plays percussion and self designed stringed instruments and realises electro-acoustic sound pieces. He works in the field of experimental, improvised music and sound art and is often involved in site-specific art projects. He realises installations and performances with light, works with photography and film. Besides his solo activities he is a member of various ensembles and collaborates with artists from different art forms. His list of activities includes numerous concerts, performances and exhibitions in Europe, America, Asia and Australia.

Light Bulb Music is an audio-visual performance using sounds that are generated by different light bulbs and actuating electric devices. The use of different controllers such as switches, dimmers, relays, flashers and various others leads to changes in the light and the current flow. This is made audible by a range of microphones and pick-ups. In addition, fine mechanical sounds occurring inside the light controllers are amplified and integrated into the music. The changes in the light intensity, the incandescence of the filaments and the rhythmic variety of the flickering and pulsing lights is directly transformed into a comprehensive and microcosmic electro-acoustic world of sound.

UTE WASSERMANN
strange songs for voice & birdcalls

Ute Wassermann disguises her voice with a number of palate whistles and birdcalls. She creates hybrid voices evoking strange songs of the human voice and the voices of creatures.

Ute is known as a vocal soloist and composer/performer for her extraordinary, many-voiced and extreme vocal sound-language, which she has brought into experimental/contemporary music in diverse ways. She has developed techniques to “mask” the voice using birdcall-whistles, palate whistles or resonant objects, and designs sound-installations. A particular interest is the development of compositions for spaces with unusual acoustic qualities.

She studied visual arts (sound installation and performance art) at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg with Henning Christiansen and Allan Kaprow among others, and subsequently visual art, music and singing at the University of California, San Diego (with a DAAD grant). As a vocal soloist in contemporary and experimental music Ute Wassermann has performed in festivals, galleries and clubs throught Europe and also in Australia and Asia.As an improvising musician she performs regularly with musicians of the London scene and in duos with Richard Barrett, Aleks Kolkowski and Birgit Ulher, in the quartet “speak easy” (with Phil Minton, Thomas Lehn and Martin Blume) as well as in larger formations such as the octet fOrch or ECIO.

As an interpreter of contemporary music she has given premieres of numerous works composed specially for her voice, for example by Richard Barrett, Chaya Czernowin, Henning Christiansen, Hans-Joachim Hespos, Michael Maierhof, Michael Finnissy and Ana Maria Rodriguez, with the ASKO Ensemble, Elision, Munich Chamber Orchestra, KNM Berlin and others. She has taken part in music theatre productions by Matthias Kaul (Ensemble L’art pour l’art), Salvatore Sciarrino, Gerhard Stäbler and others, and performances with dancers, circus artists and visual artists; pedagogical projects and workshops with her choral composition “mimic” for festivals and cultural institutions.

Bastian Duncker: alto sax

Jan-Bas Bollen: Bass, electronics, visuals

ARTIST INFO:

Cinema Soloriens is a multi-media performance consisting of James Harrar’s experimental and highly personal film and video images with a live musical rendering of soundtracks for each film. The musical concepts are created, directed and performed by Harrar (tenor sax, clarinet, flute, bulbul tarang, reeds, voice & effects) with Roro (rogier smal). When combined, the Artists endeavor to reveal deeper levels of interpretation within Harrar’s visceral film poems. This presentation also celebrates the early beginnings of cinema, providing live music to support and elevate the silent movie experience.
