Drawing influence from music ranging from György Ligeti to the pygmies of Central Africa, the work of film directors Andrei Tarkovsky and Jean-Luc Godard and the creations of pioneering chefs Ferran Adrià and Heston Blumenthal, Tom's warm sound and all-encompassing approach are becoming increasingly well known across Europe and beyond. Recent recordings include Julia Hülsmann Quartet (ECM, 2013), Eric Schaefer's 'Who's Afraid of Richard W.' (ACT, 2013), Miles Perkin Quartet (2012), H3B Songs No Songs (Abalone, 2012) and Postcards from Pushkin with Richard Fairhurst (Babel, 2011). As a composer, Tom has been awarded commissions from the BBC/RPS for both the City of London Festival (Postcards from Pushkin with Richard Fairhurst), and the BBC Proms (And Distant Shore, with Richard Fairhurst and ace classical trumpeter Giuliano Sommerhalder). The Geneva Downtown Orchestra also commissioned a suite of music for 9-piece ensemble with Arthurs.Høiby.Ritchie at it's centre, and A.H.R have also performed a suite by Tom with the Elysian and Gerdur Gunnarsdottir String Quartets. 2010 saw the commission of Fire Paintings (for Yves Klein), which was premiered by the BBC Concert Orchestra with Tom and drummer Stuart Ritchie as soloists, and 2011 saw a further BBC commission for the Elias Quartet plus Swiss drummer Samuel Rohrer. Bands range from the duo with Richard Fairhurst and trio Arthurs-Høiby-Ritchie to sideman work with H3B (Denis Badault, Sébastien Boisseau, Régis Huby), Miles Perkin Quartet (Benoît Delbecq, Miles Perkin, Thom Gossage), Julia Hülsmann Quartet (Marc Muellbauer, Heinrich Köbberling), as well as in quartet with Julie Sassoon, Lothar Ohlmeier and Samuel Rohrer. Much of Tom's improvised experimental output is available through the Not Applicable Label, whether with the trio GLUE (Miles Perkin, Yorgos Dimitriadis), working with interactive computer software (Long Division, Ollie Bown), or in duo with electrician Simon Vincent.

Berlin based AFTERBURNER is the new collaborative project of vocalist Audrey Chen and electronic artist Doron Sadja. Unique in a crowded field of voice and electronics duos, the pair weaves together Chen’s idiosyncratic vocal growls and chirps with Sadja’s dense synthetic atmospheres into a singular monolithic texture. Intimate, dark, chaotic and ritualistic, AFTERBURNER have created a fascinating vision of romantic noise music that is all their own.

R A B I A T O R

In Spring 2015 Nora Krahl and the composer Juan Felipe Waller founded this new duo for analog electronic music. In the rabiatoric world reality is limited and uncontrollable – the view through the rabid eye becomes experimental hearing. With handmade devices the duo creates an environment with unpredictable features, where creative malfunctionary circuits unite with sounding objects from another world.

AUDREY CHEN

Chinese-American musician who was born into a family of material scientists, doctors and engineers, outside of Chicago in 1976. She turned to the cello at age 8 and voice at 11. After years of classical and conservatory training in both instruments, with a resulting specialization in early and new music, she parted ways again in 2003 to begin new negotiations with sound in order to discover a more individually honest aesthetic. Now, using the voice and cello, Chen’s work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. A large component of her music is improvised and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores preparations, traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language. Recent projects, aside from performing solo, include her voice only duo with London based artist, Phil Minton, a duo with NYC turntablist, Maria Chavez and a collaborative project with German conceptual artist, John Bock. Since 2004, Chen has been performing across Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Canada and the United States. She is currently based in Berlin, Germany.

JUAN FELIPE WALLER

Mexican-Dutch composer Juan Felipe Waller studied at the CIEM in Mexico City, Rotterdams Conservatorium and at IRCAM in Paris. His pieces have been widely performed in Europe, Mexico, Taiwan, Australia and the USA, His music often involves a ‘lens of deformation’ as an integrative ingredient, manifesting the maleability of sound by intertwining instruments, harmonies and pre-established sonorities. He also develops live performances with a self made a midi-ratchet triggering sound and video manipulation. His live improvisations are characterized by hybrid pulsations, and electronic detonations, and are mostly focused on accompanying film or performative acts. He currently uses hand made devices which are electronic circuitry sound devices which involve intuitive playing methods, resulting in a mutating range of organic rash clusters.

TIM CATLIN

Tim Catlin is a guitarist, instrument designer and sound artist with a deep fascination for exploring the sonic possibilities inherent in friction, magnetism and resonant systems. Although his work spans composition, improvisation, installations and soundtracks, common threads woven throughout are a keen ear for sonic minutiae, a preference for physical over digital audio manipulation and a yearning for transcendence through sound. Much of his activity has involved re-investigating the sonic properties of the guitar through a combination of traditional and extended techniques, guitar preparation and modified designs. These pieces are often drone based and densely textural, “blurring lines between metal machine music and holy minimalism.” (The Wire, UK) Further works utilising resonance, feedback and the harmonic series have employed electric sitar, chromatic handbell sets, cymbals and long string instruments. Most recently he has constructed a set of new instruments; the “Vibrissae”. These are microtonally tuned metal rod instruments, which are activated by longitudinal stroking to produce a sustained, “singing” tone. He formed the Overtone Ensemble in 2012 to perform works using these instruments along with other self-made instruments. He has performed or collaborated with Machinefabriek, Jason Kahn, Jon Mueller, Otomo Yoshihide, Phill Niblock, Mike Cooper, Candlesnuffer, Philip Samartzis, Rod Cooper, The Wall of E Guitar Ensemble and many others. Solo and collaborative releases include “Radio Ghosts” (23five, 2007), “Slow Twitch”, (Dr Jims, 2004), “Sieve” with David Brown (Bocian, 2013), “Glisten” and “Patina” with Machinefabriek (Low Point, 2009 and 2011) and “Plates and Wires” with Jon Mueller, (Crouton 2007).

Tobt moved to Amsterdam in 1984 and studied for a short while at the Sweelinck Conservatorium. He quickly became involved with Amsterdam improvisers and dropped his studies to immerse himself in the improvised music scene. Hailing from the gothic isle of Tasmania, USER creates Subterranean ambient studio explorations created with guitar, effects, field recordings, and appropriated sound. A sound project by Australian artist Scot Cotterell, which has been presented at empty punk bars and packed concert halls around Oz.

IAIN MCINTYRE

Iain's "A Warning" project first took form whilst Iain McIntyre (ninetynine, Thee Stag Knights, The Hatchetmen) was living in London in 2004. Inspired by the film work of composers such as John Carpenter and John Cameron and gifted the use of a three track recorder and a Holiday Genie organ McIntyre crafted a soundtrack to a “lost” dystopian film set in the US of the Nixonian 70s. Completing work on the soundtrack using a number of analogue synthesizers during 2005 and 2006 McIntyre invited a number of Australian musicians to contribute vocals, strings, piano and drums to the project. Alongside work on the musical side of the project McIntyre raided various video and online archives for stock footage with which to create the surreal “lost” movie the soundtrack accompanies. 15 separate clips have been put together to tell the story of a shell shocked and alcoholic journalist who is forced into private detective work following a 1972 military coup within the US. Traveling across America in search of the runaway daughter of a high ranking politician our hero experiences saucer landings, fish falls and earthquakes. Are these phenomena merely the result of his fast deteriorating psyche or are they part of some wider conspiracy involving his quarry?

PAUL GLAZIER

To make the "OZ" theme complete Paul Glazier will present a new version of his film "Yellow Brick Road Works". The material for this work, both audio and visual, was drawn from the classic 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz". Taking a figurative magnifying-glass to the original film "Yellow Brick Road Works" examined the building-blocks of this icon and unfurled a new road to Oz and back. In 'Dorothy Squeezed' Paul will improvise live electronic music with samples form both the "Wizard" and the "Road Works" squeezing the original 98 minute video into a frenetic 30 minute trip!

LEOPOLD LANDRICHTER

Leopold studied painting in university in Vienna and moved to Berlin 9 years ago. In his paintings he often use lines to fix the form in something like a skeletal structure. This gives him a frame where he sets the colours. With the colours he starts a process which is based on repetition, expansion and improvisation. He is interested in activities inside the picture, how colour and form are related and affect each other. The pictures do not explain or describe anything. They stay somewhere between and are more about space, activity, dynamics or visual music.

JON ROSE

Jon Rose is an Australian violinist born in the UK in 1951.[1] Rose began playing violin at age 7 after winning a music scholarship to King's School in Rochester. For over 35 years, Rose has been at the sharp end of new, improvised, and experimental music and media. A polymath, he is as much at home creating large environmental multi-media works as he is playing the violin on a concert stage. Central to this practice has been 'The Relative Violin' project, a unique output, rich in content, realising almost everything on, with, and about the violin and string music in general. Most celebrated is the worldwide Fence project; least known are the relative violins created specifically for and in Australia. He has appeared on over 60 albums, and worked with artists such as Kronos Quartet, Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, Shelley Hirsh, Chris Cutler, Otomo Yoshihide, KK Null, Alvin Curran, Evan Parker, Phil Minton, John Cage, Tony Oxley, Steve Beresford, Eugene Chadbourne, Bob Ostertag, Jim Denley, Elliott Sharp, George Lewis, Christian Marclay, Toshinori Kondo, Joelle Leandre, Frances-Marie Uitti, Barre Phillips and John Zorn.
