Since 2006 AUXXX has been presenting mixed media programmes at various venues in Berlin and Amsterdam. AUXXX specialises in combining artists and their audiences in a special way, tapping into creative undercurrents and opening up new channels. Between September 2017 and June 2019 AUXXX organised a special series of film and music events together with Dr Claus Löser at Brotfabrik Kino in Berlin. Various approaches to composing for and playing to film were showcased - we tried to avoid the typical format of “improvised soundtrack to a silent movie” and instead challenged musicians to compose and perform on an equal footing with the films, sometimes using the original soundtracks as source material, other times playing a concert along with and in parallel to the film on screen.

Xiu Xiu is the conduit for the uncompromising and unnervingly personal musical works of Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Jamie Stewart, plus a roll call of collaborators both in studio and onstage. Formed in 2002 the current line-up consists of Stewart (the only constant member since formation), Angela Seo, Thor Harris, and Jordan Geiger. The band's name comes from the film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl and has influenced the sound of their music according to Stewart. Xiu Xiu have released their new album titled 'Girl with Basket of Fruit' on February 8, 2019 via Polyvinyl.

"Trevor is a 16 year old, sometimes-violent skinhead with no regard for authority, and would rather spend his time stealing cars than sitting in the detention centre to which he is sent. His social worker, Harry Parker, tries to do his best, but Trevor is only interested when there's something that he can get out of it. The authorities within the centre try to make Trevor conform to the norms of society, but he takes no notice, and would rather speak in a torrent of four-letter words and racial abuse."

"In-situ Cinema" | UK 2016 | 6min | Directed by Maria Anastassiou and Julie Myers
Over four weekends in July residents of Chester Road and Carlisle Road in Queen’s Park, Bedford joined artists Julie Myers and Maria Anastassiou for a series of filmmaking workshops in their outdoor filmmaking space. In-situ Cinema reflects the thoughts and ideas residents have about their local area - the defunct telephone box becomes a silver birch tree, a concrete wall becomes a magical gate into the park, speeding cars vanish and overgrown gardens become places for adventure. Commissioned by Bedford Creative Arts. Funded by Arts Council England, Bedford Borough Council and bpha.

MARIA ANASTASSIOU
Maria Anastassiou is an artist/filmmaker based in London. She uses analogue and digital media in moving image, social practice and curatorial projects. Her work is informed by experimental ethnographic approaches to documentary and structuralist film traditions. She is interested in the form and application of the filmmaking process as an entry point into responding to place, historical narrative, communities, individuals and other artists. Her films highlight the illusory space of the moving image and the material space of the surface employing the possibilities and limitations of the apparatus to self-reflective effect. Many of her projects are collaborative and defined by an exchange with other artists and the public, across disciplines and presentational platforms. Recent commissions: New Geographies (2018), Bedford Creative Arts (2016, 2017), Whitney Museum of American Art (2016), Creative Europe Program (2015-2017), Europe for Citizens (2014), Open Society Foundation (2014).

KAFFE MATTHEWS
Kaffe Matthews is a pioneering music maker who works live with space, data, things, and place to make new electroacoustic composition. The physical experience of music for the maker and listener has always been central to her approach and to this end she has also invented some unique interfaces, the sonic armchair, the sonic bed and the sonic bike that not only enable new approaches to composition for makers but give immediate ways in to unfamiliar sound and music for wide ranging audience. Violin, theremin, wild salmon, star maps, NASA scientists, sharks, children, solo walks and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra have all sourced this growing body of works for sites such as concert hall, city street, basement club, gallery, theatre, living room, empty shop and the human body. Kaffe has also established the collectives Music for Bodies(2006) and The Bicrophonic Research Institute(2014) where ideas and techniques are developed within a pool of coders and artists using shared and open source approaches, publishing all outcomes online. Awards include a NESTA Dreamtime Fellowship; Honorary Professor of Music at the Shanghai Music Conservatory; a BAFTA with Mandy McIntosh and Zeena Parkins; Distinction Prix Ars Electronica Sonic Bed_London, Honorary Mention Prix Ars Electronica cd cécile and she is the first woman to have received the Edgar Varèse guest professorship in computer music at TU Berlin. Kaffe has also been releasing solo works on Annette Works since 1996.

ARTIST INFO
Takashi Makino (b. 1978 ) is a Tokyo-based experimental filmmaker widely considered to be one of the most influential Japanese moving-image artists of his generation. After graduating from the the cinema department at Nihon University College of Art, he spent time honing his skills in the London-based studio of the Quay Brothers before moving back to Japan. His unique working process usually involves capturing representational footage of humans, nature, and urban life in various formats and then transforming these images radically during the editing stage. Through a process of layering, superimposition and other formal manipulations, these concrete images blend together into pulsating visual fields of organic abstraction in his finished works.
Makino regularly presents installations, screenings, and audio-visual performances of his work internationally, having appeared in over 120 cities to date. Recent engagements include: documenta 14, Athens, Greece (2017); Austrian Film Museum, Vienna, Austria (2017); New York Film Festival, New York, USA (2014, 2017); Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK (2016); The Korean Film Archive, Seoul, Korea (2016); BFI IMAX Theatre, London, UK (2016); MoMAPS1, New York, USA (2013); San Francisco MoMA, USA (2009); New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, USA (2008).
