KELAN

Bristol based Kelan lands in Berlin for a one-off live show!

Kelan - Street Ease (Strobe Warning)

Kelan’s recent 'self titled' outing on his own Bellyache imprint, are 7 heavyweight tracks that skin the surface of experience that constitutes the Kelan sound. Melding societal and personal reflections within a smelter of visceral and euphoric influences, the self-titled album is a raw, honest, and rebellious chapter in the work of Bristol’s industrial troubadour. This second effort was conceived over the course of 2 hedonistic years and written in Milan, Paris, Oulu and his hometown of Bristol.

DEATH AWARENESS CAFE

James Main - voice
Eleni Poulou - synth, voice
Max Bauer - guitar
Hilary Jeffery - brass
Juan Felipe Waller - electronics, drum machines

Outside, the city continues its indifferent pulse. Traffic, sodium light, the quiet hum of Discontent .. Are You ready to Leave The City? Come to Death Awareness Cafe. Where Heroes Envy Quitting. Inside Sick Moons linger like the aftertaste of morphine, the memory of a dream that has already begun to rot... just be Optimistic about nothing... ok?

Death Awareness Cafe is a project by i.u.r.a.n.u.s aka James Main

μ ensemble

Alf Brooks - sine waves, radio
Aisling Marnane - viola
Germán Gabriel García - trumpet, flugelhorn
Joseph Summers - bagpipes, hurdy gurdy, string instruments, whistles

μ ensemble (pronounced ‘mu ensemble’) is a quartet producing quietly ecstatic microtonal drone music. Using a motorised hurdy-gurdy, home-made bagpipes, viola, trumpet and sine-waves, the group produce a wavering cloud of texture and tone designed to melt into the atmosphere and surround the audience like heavy air.

RABIATOR

Nora Krahl + Juan Felipe Waller - electronics

In the world of Rabiator, reality is limited and uncontrollable. Using hand-built analogue electronics, the duo creates an environment with abruptly changing properties. Creative circuits lead to intentional malfunctions and connect with sounding objects of the ‘real’ world. Rabiator instruments often take on a life of their own at unexpected moments!

ORGANZA RAY + FRIENDS - DJ SETS

Hilary Jeffery + Eleni Poulou team up with 2 fanatic music friends to play everything from vintage chilled ambient to ancient space rocks via trance inducing rembetikacid into free from fall out radiophonic bliss and more!

Oscar Wyers - percussion, electronics, vocals

Hailing from the Netherlands, Oascar Wyers is influenced by post-punk art groups and collectives that developed out of the squat scene and its offshoots. An open approach to the making process and a strong DIY mentality when it comes to work ethos are key to his practice. His work has strong rhythmical leanings, and prefers textures and grooves over progression and storytelling.

SET 1: WERKHALLE

Hilary Jeffery presents a sequence of pieces taken from Philip Corner's recent collection of compositions:

"The Art of No-Art" (2022), Los Angeles: Recital Program

Philip Corner recently sold his old Swiss alphorn to Hilary Jeffery and subsequently sent this book for him to explore and play from, suggesting that some pages should work on 3 or 4 octaves of the instrument, with glissandos interpreted as sweeps through the harmonic series. Although the compositions in this book are originally conceived for piano exploring multiples of one key on several octaves, many lend themselves to other instrumentations. Hilary has selected a sequence of these pieces, combined together for a complete programme of solo alphorn with trombone interjections. Hilary originally recorded a series of trombone pieces by Corner together with his teacher James Fulkerson which was released on the CD "Extreme Positions" (2007), New World Records.

The first ever performance by a new ensemble dedicated to performing the music of Philip Corner - Ensemble Treffen Um Die Ecke (ETUDE). Corner's music present creative challenges to musicians in a playful and immediate way. His compositions dive deep into the material of music and its transcendental qualities. To play his music is to take music very seriously, in a lighthearted and fun way. This new ensemble will also play pieces from "The Art of No-Art" and more. This is their first musical meeting, and a pilot for future long term projects.

Wolfgang Seidel

Born in 1949 in West Berlin in the last weeks of the blockade of the city by the Soviet army, Wolfgang Seidel has been heavily involved with the music scene in Berlin since he started playing drums in rock bands as a teenager. In the late 1960s he found himself in the vicinity of Joseph Beuys’ student Conrad Schnitzler and the Zodiak Free Arts Lab, one of the cradles of the music which would later get the label “Krautrock”. He played in Conrad Schnitzler’s group Eruption, an experimental unit which looked for new sounds and new forms of musical interaction. In 1970, Seidel was among the founders of Ton Steine Scherben, one of the first bands to combine rock music with the German language. From 1980 on, Seidel brought the experience of rock music and free improvisation together in groups such as Popular Mechanics and in collaboration with Alfred Harth. Today he is active in Berlin’s thriving Echzeitmusik and free improvisation scenes as a drummer and synthesizer player.

Zsolt Sőrés

Zsolt Sőrés (Budapest, 1969) is a "sonic ontologist", experimental music composer, improviser (five-string viola and electronics), sound and intermedia artist. Sőrés has been one of the longest active and inescapable figures of the Hungarian experimental music and sound art scene for more than 30 years. His music and sound art explores the possibilities of conceptual-meta-music electro-acoustic free improvisation and the "flux" nature of sound as a material and the 21st century possibilities of the objet sonore concept. Current projects: Ahad (solo), Liz Allbee - Matthias Koole - Zsolt Sőrés trio, Werner Zappi Diermaier's faust, Inconsolable Ghost (with Hilary Jeffery, Gideon Kiers and others), Un-garians (with André Vida), Isabel Anders - Victor Laju - Zsolt Sőrés trio, collaborations with Anla Courtis (Reynols), Franz Hautzinger, Nicola Hein, Christian Kobi, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Ute Wassermann and Organza Ray (Hilary Jeffery, Eleni Poulou), among others. In 2020, he set up his own record label, Hinge Thunder. In 2014, Sőrés curated the first international sound installation art exhibition in Hungary, entitled On the Edge of Perceptibility - Sound Art, at the Kunsthalle in Budapest. He was a recipient of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Programme (Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD) 2021 grant for sound art and music, and has since been living and working in Berlin.

UN-GARIANS
- meta music -

Zsolt Sőrés - viola, electronics
André Vida - saxophones, electronics

Zsolt Sőrés and André Vida have been playing together in different formations since 2013. Their Berlin-based duo Un-garians is a continuation of their more focused collaboration that was born as a result of their work together since 2018.

In addition to traditional concert situations and studio music, their music, based on real-time composition and site-specific improvisation, is also characterised by a materialist approach to sonic ontological actionism. Such as Vida's "breathless saxophone music" project, or new, custom-developed, extended sounding, interactive instruments in electroacoustic environments, or participation in concert installations and sound installation-intermedia art projects.

Through the performance of their works, they primarily question the changing position of musical language in the 21st century: instead of the traditional and less relevant improvisation-composition dichotomy, the sonic practical possibilities for sonic interpretations are sought in the context of music vs. sound object.

Singalong with Jupiter Cat

While practising tuba at Tempelhofer Feld in the beautiful Berlin summer of 2020 - in between shutdowns - I found myself playing the melody to "We Shall Overcome". While playing, new lyrics came to me affirming my firm belief that reality is already virtual enough and so "we shall go offline".

Singalong with Jupiter Cat!

If I Were A Fat Cat

JUPITER CAT sings "if i were a fat cat"

"If I Were A Fat Cat"

While practising tuba, shortly after the Corona shutdown started in Berlin, I found myself playing the melody of "I Were A Rich Man" from the musical "Fiddler On The Roof", while playing this song new lyrics came to me and I realised I had to record them. The lyrics refer to fat cats of this world - if they were to pay their dues (as most of us already do) and share their wealth which many people actually help to generate worldwide, they would help to solve many of the economic and other problems caused by this crisis. I do not have many naïve illusions or hopes that this utopian-psychedelic-Brechtian-anthem will change much, but at least its hopefully some entertainment for friends and colleagues.

I am grateful to the city of Berlin for Soforthilfe II, to the Volksbühne for paying for rehearsals which did not happen and to the Hans-Werner-Henze Musikschule in Marzahn-Hellersdorf who made it possible to continue getting paid after the school closed, giving me enough time to figure out my approach to online teaching. All this has helped me to continue working as a musician and so I feel very lucky to live and work in Berlin.

One result of all of all this is the creation of a new platform for music and education called Berlintune. The beginnings of this are already online, including a personal statement about how I think this situation is a really great opportunity to retune and restart:

CINESTHESIA

Since 2006 AUXXX has been presenting mixed media programmes at various venues in Berlin and Amsterdam. AUXXX specialises in combining artists and their audiences in a special way, tapping into creative undercurrents and opening up new channels. Between September 2017 and June 2019 AUXXX organised a special series of film and music events together with Dr Claus Löser at Brotfabrik Kino in Berlin. Various approaches to composing for and playing to film were showcased - we tried to avoid the typical format of “improvised soundtrack to a silent movie” and instead challenged musicians to compose and perform on an equal footing with the films, sometimes using the original soundtracks as source material, other times playing a concert along with and in parallel to the film on screen.
